"High praise for Chávez School"

Over Thanksgiving week we traveled to lovely Morelia, Mexico, to enroll our two oldest kids, ages 7 and 8, into a highly regarded Spanish Immersion school — The Baden-Powell Institute. The school arranged the airport pickup/drop-off, the host families and an apartment for the remaining family.

The school coordinator, Regina Chacón, customized a program specifically for our two kids. Our kids were initially interviewed and assessed by Regina, who later told me, "James, my jaw dropped when I heard your kids speak Spanish."

As a parent, it was a proud moment for me. I knew long ago that the decision to live in Davis and struggle with the higher mortgage payments and higher taxes was the right decision, but it's always nice to be reminded of the payoff.

I want to thank the Davis school district, the volunteers and, most of all, the teachers for the wonderful job they do in educating our kids. I will be returning to The Baden-Powell Institute this summer — hopefully, with a large group of Davis families. I also will be voting to renew the parcel taxes that continue to fund this amazing school district.
