We write to support Measure W, the parcel tax to help our schools. The state's budget process is stalled; we can be sure that however it finally ends, it won't give our schools enough money. To avoid a funding crisis like the one we dealt with last year, we need to provide additional funding ourselves. To put it simply: If Measure W does not pass, teachers will be laid off and our schools will suffer.
Davis schools have earned their reputation for excellence despite very low state funding. The Davis school district receives less per student than the state average. And it's too embarrassing to mention how much less California spends on education than most other states.
During last year's crisis, Davis residents selflessly stepped forward to save our schools. We managed to keep elementary science education and music and drama programs. We saved the jobs of our librarians, and numerous elementary and secondary teachers.
But last year's individual donations were only a stop-gap measure. If we do not provide additional money, all those programs and jobs will be at risk again. Another school may end up on the chopping block.
No one likes paying taxes. But this fee of just $10 a month per house or $4 per apartment per month will do so much to preserve the excellence of our schools. Please vote for Measure W on Nov. 4.
