Amy Slavich - Importance of the music program
".... If the elementary music programs are cut, all the music programs will suffer, from junior high through high school. Some children cannot afford private lessons and may never be introduced to an instrument in their lifetime if it were not for the elementary school music program...."
I play the flute! I would not be able to write this statement if it
were not for the music program at my elementary school. I would have
missed out on so many great memories of playing in the elementary
school band, junior high school band, high school marching band and
symphony band, and then eventually in the Cal Poly Marching Band.
Through
my involvement in music, I instantly had a community where I belonged.
Like so many teenagers, I did not fit so easily into other high school
crowds but I always seemed to find a friend in band. When I went to my
music classes, I could leave the world behind and just play my flute.
Today
because of the Davis music elementary program, my sons can say 'I play
the violin,' and 'I play the viola and double bass.' If Measure W does
not pass, the music programs will be cut, and our children's music
experiences will be cut, too. The memories in music that they could
have made in elementary, junior high school, high school and college
will not be possible.
If
the elementary music programs are cut, all the music programs will
suffer, from junior high through high school. Some children cannot
afford private lessons and may never be introduced to an instrument in
their lifetime if it were not for the elementary school music program.
Looking
back on my music experiences, I am grateful that the school board
members, educators, parents and the community thought that an
elementary music program was important part of my education. Please
consider the importance of the Davis schools' music programs when you
vote on Nov. 4. I encourage you to vote yes on Measure W.
