I love the democratic process! I believe it is incredibly important for us to make our views known to those who set policy, so the law reflects what we value.
That is why this Spring I collaborated with a group of parents, students, elected School Board and City Council representatives, and concerned community members from Davis to advocate for better state funding for public education. We understand that excellent educational opportunity is the foundation of our community. We also know state budget cuts threaten the high quality of Davis schools. We supported other groups that were addressing the issue locally & we chose to go to the source.
Our group met with lawmakers to describe how budget reductions were affecting the Davis Joint Unified School District, and combined our voices with those of others from around the state to keep policymakers ever mindful of the needs of students. That part of the work is not complete and our efforts continue.
However, here and now, I wholeheartedly support Measure W as a means of protecting the programs placed at risk by the state budget crisis. Music, science, libraries, athletics, foreign language … these are programs we must not let slip away in Davis, even as we continue to advocate that all of California’s students deserve them.
Vote local, think global. Please vote yes for students on Measure W.
