Sue Greenwald - Invest in education; yes on W
".... We all have become suddenly more aware our country's systemic economic challenges. To be competitive in today's world, we are going to have to invest in education. This is our opportunity to pitch in and contribute to building a better future...."
Those who know me know I am not one to support every tax or expenditure suggestion that comes our way. I have been willing to stand up and oppose expenditures on more than a few occasions, when I have believed them to be unnecessary or unwise. I am, however, going to be voting yes on Measure W, and I urge others to do so, too.
Measure W funds teachers and programs. I really believe these funds are necessary to maintain the excellence of our schools. Is the teaching of science in elementary school a frill? I don't think so. Is the teaching of Mandarin a frill? Not when you stop and think of the size of the exploding Chinese economy and the role that China will play in our future.
And if you have ever heard a performance by our local young musicians, you would be an unusual person indeed if your heart did not swell with pride. Our Davis public school music program is astonishing, and so very worth preserving.
We all have become suddenly more aware our country's systemic economic challenges. To be competitive in today's world, we are going to have to invest in education. This is our opportunity to pitch in and contribute to building a better future.
I also want to remind voters again that waivers will be available for senior citizens upon request.
