Janice Bridge - All of us will benefit
I was pleased to read (Davis Enterprise, Sept 22, 2008) the announcement by John Munn that, "The Yolo County Taxpayers Association board of directors has voted to support Measure W, the proposed parcel tax to maintain school programs in Davis. . . the need for Measure W is real, and opposition at this point would not be in the best interest of the community, where taxpayers have a clear interest in the education of Davis students.”
At the public meetings discussing the need for
the parcel tax held in May and June, Mr. Munn, representing the YCTA,
urged the Board to be conservative in their crafting of measure to be
placed on the ballot. The YCTA asked that any ballot measure support
only those programs which currently exist in our schools, that the
board support their measure with the actual budget numbers, and that
the Board provide appropriate citizen oversight. Clearly the Board has
met all three of these requests.
The fiscal crisis in DJUSD is a reflection of the crisis faced by California
and by the nation. The crisis must not result in the students of today
receiving a lower quality education than students in the past. Measure
W provides our community an opportunity to respond to this need
locally, as we continue to advocate for quality public education for all children. If each of us provides the modest amount requested by Measure W, all of us will benefit.
I join John Munn (DJUSD Trustee 1997-2001) in supporting Measure W
Sincerely,
Janice Bridge, DJUSD Trustee
